Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Letter Recognition Activities

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is pretty much required reading for the first month of kindergarten.  For the last few years, I have found myself doing the same golden oldie activities to go with this classic book.  So, this year, I've decided to change it up and add in a wider range of both whole group and small group activities.

Here are a few activities I've prepped over the summer:

Coconut Tree Shake N' Color
In this activity, students shake the "coconut tree" (pop bottle filled w/ card stock letters and rice) and color the letters they see.  Sensory fun and learning at the same time!

Chicka Boom Board Game: Students take turns spinning a color and  saying the letter and the letter sound that they landed on.

Easy way to make a spinner! Hold a pencil through a paperclip!
BOOM BOOM Game: Played like "boom", "splash", "crash" or whatever you call it! Students pick an ABC card, read it, and keep it. If they get a BOOM BOOM card, they have to put back all of their cards. Play for a specified amount of time. Winner is the one with the most cards when time's up.
I used a lime green plastic pot found at Target's dollar spot. Any container that's large enough for the cards will do.

Game cards include both upper and lowercase letters.

All of these activities plus many more are included in my new pack, Learnin' Letters BOOM BOOM, available on Teachers Pay Teachers. {CLICK HERE} to take a peek at what else is included!

  1. I love the idea of the letters and sand in the bottle! I already planned for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom the second week of school, so this will be a great center idea!

    1. Hope your kiddos have fun with it! And I'm jealous that you are already planned out for the 2nd week of school!! Good job:)
