Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is pretty much required reading for the first month of kindergarten. For the last few years, I have found myself doing the same golden oldie activities to go with this classic book. So, this year, I've decided to change it up and add in a wider range of both whole group and small group activities.
Here are a few activities I've prepped over the summer:
Coconut Tree Shake N' Color
In this activity, students shake the "coconut tree" (pop bottle filled w/ card stock letters and rice) and color the letters they see. Sensory fun and learning at the same time!
Chicka Boom Board Game: Students take turns spinning a color and saying the letter and the letter sound that they landed on.
|
Easy way to make a spinner! Hold a pencil through a paperclip!
|
BOOM BOOM Game: Played like "boom", "splash", "crash" or whatever you call it! Students pick an ABC card, read it, and keep it. If they get a BOOM BOOM card, they have to put back all of their cards. Play for a specified amount of time. Winner is the one with the most cards when time's up.
|
I used a lime green plastic pot found at Target's dollar spot. Any container that's large enough for the cards will do. |
|
Game cards include both upper and lowercase letters. |

I love the idea of the letters and sand in the bottle! I already planned for Chicka Chicka Boom Boom the second week of school, so this will be a great center idea!
